Sclerotherapy is a common treatment used for small- to medium-sized
veins and is easily performed in our office with minimal to no discomfort.
A tiny needle is used to inject a solution (sclerosant) into the vein that
irritates the lining. In time, the veins collapse and are reabsorbed by the
body. This results in the surface veins being no longer visible. Depending
on the size and location of the veins, different types and strengths of
sclerosants are used. Many times, only one sclerotherapy session is
required for completion of treatment but it could take two to three
sessions for full resolution.
Normal activities can be resumed immediately after sclerotherapy, though
support hose and/or bandages may be required for several days following the procedure.
Sometimes bruising and pigmentation may occur after sclerotherapy, but almost all of this
fades away within a few months. The best way to treat pain or soreness after the procedure is
with over-the-counter medicines like ibuprofen.
